Dementia is a hot topic and with an aging population it is not surprising that Alzheimer’s disease takes center stage when age related conditions are discussed. Currently affecting 10 percent of people over 65, Alzheimer’s is a disease that causes a steady decline in memory with diagnosis now approximately 87 to 94 percent accurate.

Even now, this complex disease is not that well understood. Studies have shown that the greatest known risk for developing Alzheimer’s is increasing age. Many people experiencing the first signs of Alzheimer’s are unwilling to admit to themselves or others that there is anything wrong.

Dementia covers quite a broad spectrum of problems but they are all, including Alzheimer’s disease, currently treated in a similar fashion. Stalling the progression and possibly improving the condition is about the best that can currently be achieved with drugs but no definitive treatment has yet been discovered. At the moment, three drugs are used routinely to treat sufferers all of which have been approved by the FDA, Donepezil, Tacrine, and Rivastigmine.

Another drug, Memantine, a derivative of the older anti-influenza drug Amantadine is proving successful at slowing down the mental decline of sufferers. There are very few side effects and four fifths of it are passed out in urine unchanged by the kidneys.

This is due to an increase in the life expectancy of the populations in the industrialized world. Although contracting the disease is a tragedy, the cost of treatment and care for sufferers is causing economic vibrations. Nearly half the annual budget was spent on research into the disease last year by the National Institute of Aging.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is one proven method you can use to reduce the risks of contracting dementia. Although not full proven yet, researchers studying Alzheimer’s patients have noticed that those who stay healthy and cheerful have slowed down the rate of decline. There have been incidents where a younger person has contracted the disease but it is hoped these will not start to increase.

The Importance of a Healthy Mind

Article by Bob Lachinet

Your state of mind can affect your body in ways you cannot even imagine. Have you ever noticed that people who constantly experience high levels of stress often look tired, rundown and older than they actually are? This article will provide you with information about the importance of a healthy mind. Whether you’re just getting started or looking for next big thing, the following information will be beneficial to you.

You would be surprised at how many people are constantly exposed to stress! Did you know that even infants can experience stress? Think about it – when a baby cries, they usually want or need something whether it be attention, food or a diaper change. If their cries are ignored, they may experience stress because their needs are delayed. Adults, on the other hand, can experience stress in a variety of ways that usually stem from the results of day-to-day activities. Triggers like demands at work, family problems and social conflict can throw just about anyone into a downward spiral.

Knowing your triggers, however, can help you take the step towards ensuring mental health! Some of your distractions or concerns are easily dealt with while others require extra steps to resolve. The best way to ensure mental health is to recognize that it is extremely important. Most people would ignore signs and symptoms of mental distress because they are used to believing that it’s ‘all in your head.’ All too often, people do not recognize the problems until they have already affected them in a negative way.

One of the best sources of information regarding the state of your mental health is you, yourself. You know your limits and what you go through everyday. You can also recognize the factors that affect your mental health when you encounter them. To make sure you take care of your mental health you should learn to identify situations, events and people that are stressful to you so you will know how best to manage them when you need to.

Once you recognize your stress triggers and the things that challenge your mental health, there are certain steps you need to take. Here are some tips that should help you along the way:

Assess your mental health on a regular basis. Try to assess at what point your state of mind is at its best and then try to be aware of when you dip below that level. The point here is to take note of ‘trends’ in your emotional well-being. Have you been feeling happy and satisfied lately or are you generally depressed and have been for some time?

Set aside time to focus on your mental wellness everyday. Often, taking a few short breaks to relax everyday can do a lot for your mental wellness. Recognize that it is normal for people to have concerns and worries but that what you need to focus on are real solutions. To do this effectively, you need to make a conscious effort to manage your mental wellness.

Choose the most effective ways to manage your negative thoughts. People have different ways of dealing with stress and unpleasant emotions. When these thoughts enter your head, learn to recognize them and then interrupt the flow. Think of more pleasant things or distract yourself by taking part in more productive activities. These thoughts will probably appear from time to time but the key is to prevent them from dominating your mind.

Learn to prioritize. Most of the time, the stress that affects your mental health is caused by an overwhelming sense of being behind at work, at home and financially. Make a conscious effort to prioritize your life. Even if you have a list of 20 things to do in one day, for example, being able to complete seven of them before lunch hour can help reduce pressure.

Challenge your mind. The mind can get a bit rusty when it focuses on only one or two things. Learn to tread on unfamiliar ground and challenge yourself. Learn a new skill, for example, such as playing an instrument or learning a mind-stimulating game like chess. Unfamiliar things make the mind work harder because there is new information to process.

Go easy on yourself. If your mind wants to take a break, then go ahead and let it rest. Your mental wellness rests on how well you can listen to what your mind is telling you!

A Healthy Gut a Healthy Mind and Body?

Article by Graeme Sinclair

More and more research is being carried out into the discovery of the ‘second brain’. Researchers believe that the gut acts in a similar way to the brain as it contains over 100 billion neurons and contains 95% of the bodies’ serotonin. Not only does the gut act as a brain to monitor the immune system but also it communicates with the main brain. It would make sense that maintaining a healthy gut will create a healthy mind and body.

Like a lot of things in life research is telling us what we really already knew. How many times have you felt the answer in your gut? Now that researchers are finding out that the gut acts as a brain will you pay more attention to it?

I know that in the past I could not always rely on my brain to give me the answers I needed and a lot of the time it would tell me all the things I didn’t need to hear, my head full of automatic negative thoughts and self doubting. I think positive thoughts, take supplements and laugh and nod (I’ve not been sectioned yet) to feed my brain so that I will function better, but if I don’t take care of my gut, I am only doing half to job.

I actually came across this as a result of gut feeling. I was introduced to a product that had been used for thousands of years to promote and maintain health and knew in my gut that this could help me conquer my mind. As a result of becoming involved with this product I heard about the ‘second brain’ and it all seemed to make sense. I was within weeks of consuming this product becoming more energised, feeling generally better and found that the negatives thoughts and self-doubts could be overruled with positive thoughts and re-enforcing actions (laughing, smiling and nodding again).

I realise that I need to maintain both my brains to succeed in my goal of becoming more than I am.

Good Habits Lead To A Healthy Mind

Article by Dinah Jackson

As far as I’m concerned, we have got the cart before the horse. Psychologists overwhelming would have believe that if change our thinking, then we will change our feelings, and our behavior. Broadly known, this is called ‘cognitive therapy,’ though there are many styles and variations on it. One invariable problem is that it is never permanent.

Another example that fits this paradigm is the use of ‘exposure therapy’ for victims of phobia. While I think that ultimately we all must face fears, I believe that the disappearance of a phobia occurs over time, concurrent with a gradual change in the nature and inner strengthening of an individual. If I’m afraid of heights, I can’t see how being encouraged to go to rooftops would be anything less than traumatic, no matter how systematically and gradually done.

Professionals in therapy do not like to talk about relativistic values though they believe in them and I don’t get the impression that they believe in a truly healthy mind (Freud certainly didn’t, and he gets far less credit than he deserves for shaping modern therapy). The fact is, until now, going back to tribal humanity, civilization has believed in absolute values. To put it simply, self-discipline, virtues, and a code of behavior were what people lived by. Or rather, judging from history, by what healthy people have lived. Barbarism in history is nothing new, but in every case you can find violations of the moral codes of the time. These days we’re in an age of mass hysteria and neurosis with nothing to believe in. I don’t think it’s ever been worse.

The point is that if one changes his behavior, and begins to act virtuously, he will change his mind. If he controls his behavior simply out of fear he will accomplish little or nothing. But if he changes because it the ‘right’ thing to do, his heart and mind will follow. The mind serves the being and is antecedent, not the other way around.

Increase Your Memory Power, Maintain A Healthy Mind

Article by Freddy Gandarilla

Let’s talk about the Laws of Memory – the law of comprehension is the simplest but yet the most important law of memory. Do you always remember %100 of what you read, when you only read it once? People tend to poorly remember what they just read about because “they do too little thinking!” Sometimes you have to read a sentence more than once for you to understand it and be able to remember it. Here is a little tip that will help you enhance your memorization and comprehension; the more deeply you grasp what you’re trying to memorize and understand, the easier and the more in detail it will remain in your memory, making it easier for you to comprehend and memorize. Imagine having to write down more than %70 percent of the information you could simply remember? That would be really frustrating in my opinion, don’t you agree?

The law of previous knowledge; the more you know about a certain subject, the easier you will memorize anything related to it. Have you noticed when you open a book read long ago, you read it like if you have never read it before. Well this means when you read that book for the first time, you lacked the relevant experience and information, making it difficult to remember. But the next time you read it you’re most likely to accumulate the information better. The forms and connections between the accumulated and new knowledge really help you memorize like a champ.

Let’s talk about another law of memory; the law of interest is perhaps the easiest way to remember better. When you are really interested into something you do not have to make special efforts to remember as the ability to spontaneously memorize comes into play. French poet Anatole France wrote: “For knowledge to be digested, it must be absorbed with relish”. Putting interest into the information you want to be able to memorize will definitely help you remember better. Understanding these laws and applying them to your life will also help you increase your memory.

Maintaining a healthy mind is not and will not be a challenge for you or anyone else. Waking up in the morning with a healthy mind can really set you off for a very enthusiastic and productive day. Stop the laziness and think about the life you want to live and for how long. As you know living a healthy can lead you to be the next person turning 110 yrs. old. Then you will break a record but let’s be realistic, you might not get to that age. Always remember that your life is so beautiful giving you great things, the least you could do is take care of it so you can be around for longer.

In conclusion you need to realize how important your health is as well as your brain. Please take a time to really consider leading your-self to a healthy lifestyle.

7 Weight Loss Tips For A Healthy Mind And Body

Article by T S Gill

In order to get a healthy body, you must also work on a healthy mind. The mind has the power to control pain, illness and overeating when given the right tools to succeed. Doubt, questioning and a lack of faith in a given weight loss program are all it takes to turn the body into a fat storing machine as opposed to a fat burning machine. Here are 7 important tips for a healthy mind and body.

1. Work within your means. Many people research a new weight loss program and immediately jump into the program without thinking about the cost involved. Typically, fad weight loss diets are surrounded with expensive foods and supplements that may aid the user in losing weight but will inevitably drain the pocket. When the program becomes too expensive, other household bills may be left behind in order to pay for the plan and that can cause negative emotions, stress and weight gain. Weight loss does not have to be expensive.

2. Start with a colon-cleanse. Colon cleanse products work to rid the body of built up toxins and waste. If the intestinal system is not working correctly, any new weight-loss program can result in increased hunger from the first day. The body needs certain vitamins and nutrients and with a reduced calorie weight loss plan paired with a sluggish, impacted colon – the body will demand more foods to get what it needs.

3. Colon cleanse before and after. Colon-cleanse products do not have to be used throughout the weight-loss plan, but before and after are perfect times. Before starting the diet, colon-cleanse to prepare the body. When you have lost a ton of weight and a plateau has halted the weight-loss in its tracks, try colon-cleanse to lose weight and get things back in moving order.

4. Choose only a proven colon-cleanse product. There are colon-cleanse products out there created with a long list of natural laxatives and diuretics. These may increase weight loss and bowel movements but that does not mean they are working to get rid the body of toxins. Only a proven colon-cleanse product with toxin eliminating ingredients will help in your weight loss plan.

5. Add exercise whenever possible. Exercise is great for losing weight but adding in some activity does not have to mean preparing for a marathon. Exercise can be walking around your home or development or playing tag with your children. Pets make exercise easy as walking them once or twice a day does count and will increase weight-loss.

6. Look at these numbers, on the tape. Weight loss is funny because sometimes the numbers on the scale are standing still but the numbers on the tape measure are moving. The day you start a weight-loss plan or a colon-cleanse, measure areas of the body and note the results. When you are having no loss for a period of days in a row, take the tape measure back out and measure the areas again. You will see a loss even if the scale is being stubborn.

7. Give yourself credit for being you! Weight loss is not supposed to be fast or feel the same for any two given people. Give yourself credit for making healthier choices for your body and your mind even if weight-loss is difficult or nonexistent. Being overweight is not the same as being unhealthy.

The Healthy Mind Detox Plan

Article by Michelle Spencer

The healthy mind detox takes you through 10 days and 10 tasks. Each day you carry out a task that makes you look at yourself, your life or your thoughts differently. Getting a new perspective gives you the chance to see if you are getting what you want and need out of your life. If you can think clearly then problems seem easier to solve. You can come to a decision more quickly if you just keep to the salient points.

Following a Healthy Mind Detox program actually requires you to stop and take a really long look, not just at yourself but inside yourself and all around yourself. Remember, the whole program can be completely private. You may wish to write things down on a day-to-day basis, or you may wish to Healthy Mind Detox by simply using your mind.

Part of looking at yourself is being truthful about what you want in life: not just health, wealth and happiness (join the queue!), but much more specific things, things that can be done immediately. Keeping your eye on the big picture is very important but you also have to have the smaller, more immediate pictures colored in to keep you going.

You will be asked to think about what you really desire. Desire is better than want because it injects a real passion and passion is a strong motivational tool. Do you desire to live in the house you live in? Do you desire to landscape the garden? Do you desire more friends or fewer friends? Do you desire to go out more? etc, etc. If you sort out the small picture desires then the big picture comes into focus quite naturally.

Preparation tips

Live for the moment

Future planning is very, very important but don’t wish your life away! Living for the moment is great fun. You get loads more out of each day without doing anything other than living your life and feeling how it feels. Living for the moment means thinking for the moment. Think about things you can do today, today. And leave thinking about things you cannot do until tomorrow until tomorrow.

If you don’t organize your brain this way then, before you know it, you will be thinking about everything at every moment during your day and never actually get on with ‘doing’ anything! How easy is it, when you have an exciting weekend booked, to spend Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday thinking about Saturday? Poor weekdays, what did they ever do to deserve being wished away? Saturday and Sunday were always guaranteed – they weren’t going anywhere – so why not enjoy the weekdays and the weekend. You should also learn to waste time deliberately. Let your mind relax and regenerate, actually plan to do nothing, do things for no reason but don’t just let time slip away unnoticed – use it as relaxation so that when you want to think about something you are ready to.

Had a heavy night? In need of some hangover cures? These body detox tips are probably the most successful way to get rid of a hangover and get back to your normal bubbly self.

What a Healthy Mind Can Mean in Your Life

Article by Thomas Mannon

There is so much that requires doing in a single day. In the course of a single day, you perform thousands of simple physical tasks that require millions of complex mental calculations. For instance, driving a car requires a combination of cognitive abilities. Even if you’re an experienced driver, getting to your destination quickly and safely requires skill, concentration and a wide array of cognitive skills. To be able to arrive safely requires a healthy mind. Divided attention is one skill that allows you to look in the mirror while steering, pressing the gas pedal, signaling, paying attention to street signs and marveling at the antics of other drivers. Speed of processing is also necessary, since it allows you to react quickly to sudden and unexpected events on the road.

Visual Scanning is another cognitive ability that helps you locate the place and the moment when you need to start braking or begin a turn. Spatial Perception helps you understand the location of your car in relation to all of the other cars around you. Hand-Eye Coordination allows you to handle the steering wheel smoothly so that you’re not swerving out of your lane or over-steering when you turn. Brain fitness is therefore very important in day to day life.

There are ways that people can follow to be able to maintain a healthy brain. You can try a new route on your way to work or learn another language. Traveling to a new and unfamiliar destination or reading a different section of the newspaper is also another way of improving the health of your brain. People can also learn to play a musical instrument or try using their non-dominant hand for eating or writing. Another way of maintaining a healthy mind is by taking the cognifit assessment. Playing chess or bridge or learning a new word everyday can also improve the shape of the brain. Taking part in a brain fitness program is also very important in a person’s life.

Diet is also very vital in aiding the functions of the body. There are foods that people can include in their diets to help them have a healthy brain. Some foods have been shown to improve general brain health and others can help prevent or at least slow down the effects of certain brain diseases. That’s why it’s important to include these foods in your diet as often as possible. Tomatoes contain lycopene, which helps fight the cell damage that can be found in Alzheimer’s disease. Fish has plenty of omega 3, which help maintain a healthy nervous system, and iodine, to improve mental clarity. Whole-grain foods contain folic acid, B12, B6, which all improve brain fitness. Blackcurrants contain vitamin C, for increased mental agility. Fortified cereals are a good source of B12, which reduces homocysteine levels that may contribute to Alzheimer’s disease, which affects a healthy brain. Pumpkin seeds contain zinc, which enhances memory and thinking skills. Broccoli provides Vitamin K, which enhances the overall cognitive function.
